Academic OneFile, Expanded Academic ASAP & General OneFile

  1. Go to Academic OneFile, Expanded Academic ASAP & General OneFile and conduct your search.
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. Repeat step 2 for all all types of information (Magazines, Academic Journals, Books, News, and Multimedia) appropriate for your project.
    Note: You may only save 50 items at a time.
  4. When done, click on Marked Items under the blue PowerSearch bar near the top of the screen.
  5. In the dark red box on the left side of the screen, click on Citation Tools.
  6. In the pop-up box, under Export to third party software, check RefWorks.
  7. Turn off your internet browser's pop-up blocker.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Pop-up Blocker, then Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
  8. Click the Export button.
  9. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  10. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Annual Reviews

Records from Annual Reviews can be imported one at a time.
  1. Go to Annual Reviews and conduct your search.
  2. Select an article, then click on the title to open the full record.
  3. In the Quick Links box on the right, click on Download to citation manager.
  4. Under Include, select Citations and abstract for this article.
  5. Under Citation manager or file format, select RefWorks.
  6. Click on the Download chapter metadata box.
  7. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the reference after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  8. Your record should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
Repeat the above steps for each record.

Blackwell Synergy

  1. Go to Blackwell Synergy and conduct your search.
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. When done, click on Export citations under the red bar near the top of the screen.
  4. In the gray box beside Include, choose either Citation for this article or Citation and abstract for this article.
  5. In the gray box beside Format, choose RefWorks.
  6. In the gray box beside Direct import, make sure the button is checked.
  7. Turn off your internet browser's pop-up blocker.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Pop-up Blocker, then Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
  8. Click the Download References button.
  9. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  10. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Columbia Earthscape

Records from Columbia Earthscape can be imported one at a time.
  1. Go to Columbia Earthscape and conduct your search.
  2. Go to RefWorks.
  3. If you have an account, log in. If not, sign up for an individual account.
  4. Click on the References/Add New References.
  5. Choose the appropriate Ref Type (for example, book). Note the fields available.
  6. Copy the information from Columbia Earthscape field by field, then paste to the appropriate field in RefWorks.
    • To copy, click at the beginning of the field, hold the mouse button down, and drag it to the end. Then push the <control> and <c> keys at the same time to copy the information.
    • To paste, click in the box beside the appropriate field. Then push the <control> and <v> keys at the same time to paste the information into the box.
  7. If the record is available in .pdf format, you may not be able to copy and paste. Instead, type in the correct information.
Repeat the above steps for each record.

CSA Illumina Databases

EconLit, PAIS Archive, PAIS International

  1. Go to CSA Illumina, select the appropriate database(s), and conduct your search.
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. When done, click on the RefWorks logo near the top of the screen.
  4. Be sure that the circle beside "Use Marked Records" is selected.
  5. Turn off your internet browser's pop-up blocker.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Pop-up Blocker, then Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
  6. Click on Export to RefWorks.
  7. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  8. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

EBSCO Host Databases

Communication & Mass Media Index, MEDLINE, ERIC, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, SocINDEX

  1. Go to EBSCO Host, select the appropriate database(s), and conduct your search.
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking the Add Folder icon to the right of each citation.
  3. When done, click on the Folder has items icon near the top of the screen.
  4. To review the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  5. To select all of the citations you previously chose, beside Select, click on All.
  6. Above the list of citations on the right, click on Export.
  7. Take off the check beside Remove these items from folder after saving if you want the items to remain in the folder after performing the export function.
  8. Under Save citations to a file formatted for, check Direct Export to RefWorks.
  9. Click the Save box.
  10. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  11. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

FirstSearch

Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Alternative Press Index & Archives, BioDigest, Contemporary Women's Issues, Electronic Collections Online, WorldCat

  1. Go to FirstSearch and conduct your search:
    ¤ Group 1 (AHSearch, AltPressInd & Archives, CWI, WorldCat)
    ¤ Group 2 (BioDigest, ECO)
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. When done, click on Export in the gray bar near the top of the screen.
  4. Under Export, click on Marked Records from this Search.
  5. Under Export to, click on RefWorks.
  6. Turn off your internet browser's pop-up blocker.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Pop-up Blocker, then Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
  7. Click Export.
  8. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  9. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

HighWire Press

  1. Go to HighWire Press and conduct your search.
  2. Select the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. Near the beginning or end of the citations under For checked items below/above, click on download to citation manager.
  4. Click Go.
  5. In the box and above your citations, click on download citations to citation manager.
  6. Click on RefWorks (do not click on the link below the word RefWorks, otherwise you will be saving a file to your computer).

IgentaConnect

To Save Citations—
  1. Go to IgentaConnect and conduct your search.
  2. Select the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. When done, click on update marked list.
  4. Near the top left of the screen, click on export (plain text).
  5. From your browser, select File and then Save As.
  6. In the Save As Type drop-down box, select Text File.
  7. Select an easy-to-find location for your file and name it. Then click Save. The file extension (.txt) should not be changed.
To Import Citations—
  1. Go to RefWorks.
  2. If you have an account, log in. If not, sign up for an individual account.
  3. Click on the References drop-down box; select Import.
  4. In the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box, select Randolph College.
  5. In the Database drop-down box, select Igenta.
  6. Under Import Data from the following Text File, click on Browse to locate your file.
  7. Click on Import at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

JSTOR

  1. Go to JSTOR and conduct your search.
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking on Save Citation written in gray below each citation.
  3. When done, click on View Saved Citations written in red on the right side of the screen.
  4. Under Export Options, click on Directly export citations into RefWorks.
  5. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  6. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Lexis-Nexis Academic

  1. Go to LexisNexis Academic Search and conduct your search.
  2. Save the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. When done, click on Export citations icon above the gray bar near the top right of the screen.
  4. Under Document Range, make sure that Tagged Documents is selected.
  5. Turn off your internet browser's pop-up blocker.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Pop-up Blocker, then Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
  6. Click the red Export button.
  7. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  8. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

MathSciNet

To Save Citations—
  1. Go to MathSciNet and conduct your search.
  2. Select the citations you want to import by clicking the Add to Clipboard button under each citation.
  3. Review your marked citations by clicking the View Clipboard button near the top of the screen.
  4. Under Select format, choose Citations (BibTeX) and click SaveClip.
  5. Using your Browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file and save the file in the text (.txt) format.
To Import Citations—
  1. Go to RefWorks.
  2. If you have an account, log in. If not, sign up for an individual account.
  3. Click on the References drop-down box; select Import.
  4. In the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box, select Randolph College.
  5. In the Database drop-down box, select MathSciNet.
  6. Under Import Data from the following Text File, click on Browse to locate your file.
  7. Click on Import at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

MLA, Modern Language Association International Bibliography

To Save Citations—
  1. Go to MLA and conduct your search.
  2. Select the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. When done, click on Marked Items in the blue side bar.
  4. Also in the blue side bar, click on Print or E-mail.
  5. In the E-mail Delivery box, next to Restict contents to:, select Citation.
  6. In the box next to E-mail Address, enter your complete e-amil address. Filling in the subject box is optional.
  7. Click on the Submit E-mail Request button.
  8. Your citations will be sent as a text file to your e-mail address.
To Import Citations—
  1. Open your e-mail account.
  2. Open the the e-mail containing your citations. Click on edit, then select all. Finally, click on copy.
  3. Go to RefWorks.
  4. If you have an account, log in. If not, sign up for an individual account.
  5. Click on the References drop-down box; select Import.
  6. In the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box, select Randolph College.
  7. In the Database drop-down box, select AcadOneFile, ExpAcad, InfoTracOneFile, MLA.
  8. Check Import Data from the following Text.
  9. The cursor should have moved into the large box. If not, click there.
  10. Push the <control> and <v> keys at the same time to paste the citations into the box.
  11. Click on Import at the bottom of the screen.
  12. The citations should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Important Note:
      When testing MLA with RefWorks, not all of the citations have been importing in a consistent manner. Compare the total number of citations you meant to import with the number that actually imported.
      If all of the citations did not import, you will need to check to see which ones missing. Then the missing ones can be imported individually by pasting each citation, one at a time, into the Import Data from the following Text box.

Online Catalog, LION

Records from LION can be imported one at a time.
To Save a Citation—
  1. Go to our Online Catalog, LION and conduct your search.
  2. Open the full record that includes holdings information.
  3. In the yellow Item Information box, click on MARC Display near the bottom.
  4. Click at the beginning of the numbered tagged fields (skip the field tagged "LDR"), hold the mouse button down, and drag it to the end.
  5. Push the <control> and <c> keys at the same time to copy the citation.
To Import a Citation—
  1. Go to RefWorks.
  2. If you have an account, log in. If not, sign up for an individual account.
  3. Click on the References drop-down box; select Import.
  4. In the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box, select Randolph College.
  5. In the Database drop-down box, select Online Catalog, LION.
  6. Check Import Data from the following Text.
  7. The cursor should have moved into the large box. If not, click there.
  8. Push the <control> and <v> keys at the same time to paste the citation into the box.
  9. Look at the pasted text. Delete the line that begins LDR.
  10. Click on Import at the bottom of the screen.
  11. The citation should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
Repeat the above steps for each record.

ProjectMUSE

  1. Go to Project Muse and conduct your search.
  2. Select the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. Click on Saved Marked Results to save your choices on each screen before going to the next screen.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for subsequent screens.
  5. When done, click on Email/Export Saved Results near the top of the screen.
  6. Under Export marked results to, check RefWorks.
  7. Click on Export.
  8. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references after you log in. If you do not have an account, click sign up for an individual account to create one.
  9. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

PubMed

To Save Citations—
  1. Go to PubMed and conduct your search.
  2. Select the citations you want to import by clicking in the small box to the left of each citation.
  3. Change the Display option from Summary to MEDLINE.
  4. In the Send To drop-down, select Text. A window opens with just the references in MEDLINE format.
  5. From your browser, select File and then Save As.
  6. In the Save As Type drop-down box, select Text File.
  7. Select an easy-to-find location for your file and name it. Then click Save. The file extension (.txt) should not be changed.
To Import Citations—
  1. Go to RefWorks.
  2. If you have an account, log in. If not, sign up for an individual account.
  3. Click on the References drop-down box; select Import.
  4. In the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down box, select Randolph College.
  5. In the Database drop-down box, select PubMed.
  6. Under Import Data from the following Text File, click on Browse to locate your file.
  7. Click on Import at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
