While Randolph College does not categorically forbid the use of generative AI tools for student academic work, the College recommends that instructors establish their own policies on the use of generative AI in their courses. Instructors and students should refer to the Randolph College Honor Code for guidance on attributing authorship.
Instructors have the authority to determine how or if they allow their students to use these tools in their classes. Whether an instructor allows students to use generative AI tools in some or any capacity or outright prohibits their use, it is the instructor’s responsibility to communicate, in writing, specific expectations to students and to state the course policy and any distinct assignment policies clearly. Instructors are expected to include statements in their syllabi regarding the use of generative AI tools. The statement and policy may vary from course to course, even with the same instructor.
Students are responsible for reading and abiding by the AI policy for each course they take. If an instructor does not provide a policy statement on the use of AI and generative AI tools, and a student fully discloses and properly cites all generative AI usage, that use is not automatically an honor code violation.
