This debut poetry collection from Lisa Bird-Wilson reflects on the legacy of the residential school system: the fragmentation of families and histories, with blows that resonate through the generations. Inspired by family and archival sources, Bird-Wilson assembles scraps of a history torn apart by colonial violence. The collection takes its name from the federal government's complex organizational structure of residential schools archives, which are divided into "black files" and "red files." Acclaimed as the best-researched history of the Indians of Central Virginia. Connects the Indian story from the Stone Age people to the Indian descendants now living in Amherst County, Virginia. It is the story of Virginia's Monacan tribe -- one of American Indian's lost cultures, recently rediscovered. Once a flourishing Siouan confederacy, thriving in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Lynchburg, Virginia, these forgotten people plunged into cultural disarray before their history was accurately recorded. Houck tells the story of how the Monacan tribe became nearly extinct, largely due to the Racial Integrity Law of 1924 --Virginia's infamous "one drop" statute, which created two racial categories, "pure" white, and everybody else. Many believed that the Indians were actually light-skinned African-Americans trying to pass for white. Whites wanted to protect their privileged place, moving the country into the two racial categories mentioned. The man behind the drive to identify Indians as African-Americans: Walter Ashby Plecker, Registrar in Virginia’s Bureau of Vital Statistics in 1912. With Plecker at the helm, the bureau went on an all-out war against "amalgamation". Plecker pushed hard to enforce the Racial Integrity Law Act's provision for "ancestral registration". Plecker believed that all Indians had "polluted" their blood by mingling it with free African-Americans--or "free issues", he reclassified every Native American in the state as an African-American in state census records. The book also discusses the efforts to overcome the effects of these efforts, and includes interviews from people who went to the Indian school before they closed it, rather than integrate. The book is a wonderful description of a societal tragedy in our own country that occurred not too long ago.

While Jamestown and colonial settlements dominate narratives of Virginia's earliest days, the land's oldest history belongs to its native people. Monacan Millennium tells the story of the Monacan Indian people of Virginia, stretching from 1000 A.D. through the moment of colonial contact in 1607 and into the present. Written from an anthropological perspective and informed by ethnohistory, archaeology, and indigenous tribal perspectives, this comprehensive study reframes the Chesapeake's early colonial period-and its deep precolonial history-by viewing it through a Monacan lens. Shifting focus to the Monacans, Hantman reveals a group whose ritual practices bespeak centuries of politically and culturally dynamic history. This insightful volume draws on archeology, English colonial archives, Spanish sources, and early cartography to put the Monacans back on the map. By examining representations of the tribe in colonial, postcolonial, and contemporary texts, the author fosters a dynamic, unfolding understanding of who the Monacan people were and are.

The contemporary Monacan Nation had approximately 1,400 registered members in 2006, mostly living in and around Lynchburg, Virginia, in Amherst County, but some are scattered like any other large family. Records trace the Monacans of Virginia back to the late 1500s, with an estimated population of over 15,000 in the 1700s.   Like members of some other native tribes, the Monacans have a long history of struggles for equality in jobs, health care, and education and have suffered cultural, political, and social abuse at the hands of authority figures appointed to serve them. The critical difference for the Monacans was the actions of segregationist Dr. Walter A. Plecker, Director of the Bureau of Vital Statistics from 1912 until he retired at age 85 in 1946. A strong proponent and enforcer of Virginia's Racial Integrity Law of 1924 (struck down in 1967), which prohibited marriage between races, Plecker's interpretation of that law convinced him that there were only two races-white and colored-and anyone not bearing physically white genetic characteristics was "colored" and that included Indians. He would not let Indians get married in Virginia unless they applied as white or colored, he forced the local teachers to falsify the students' race on the official school rolls, and he threatened court clerks and census takers with prosecution if they used the term "Indian" on any official form. He personally changed government records when his directives were not followed and even coerced postpartum Indian mothers to list their newborns as white or colored or they could not take their infants home from the hospital. Eventually the federal government intervened, directing the Virginia state officials to begin the tedious process of correcting official records. Yet the legacy of Plecker's attempted cultural genocide remains. Through interviews with 26 Monacans, one Episcopal minister appointed to serve them, one former clerk of the court for Amherst County, and her own story, Whitlock provides first person accounts of what happened to the Monacan families and how their very existence as Indians was threatened.  

A long-ignored prehistoric moundbuilding people. By the 14th century more than a dozen accretional burial mounds--reaching heights of 12 to 15 feet--marked the floodplains of interior Virginia. Today, none of these mounds built by the nearly forgotten Monacan Indians remain on the landscape, having been removed over the centuries by a variety of natural and cultural causes. This study uses what remains of the mounds--excavated from the 1890s to the 1980s-- to gain a new understanding of the Monacans and to gauge their importance in the realm of the late prehistoric period in the Eastern Woodlands. Based on osteological examinations of dozens of complete skeletons and thousands of isolated bones and bone fragments, this work constructs information on Monacan demography, diet, health, and mortuary ritual in the 10th through the 15th centuries. The results show an overall pattern of stability and local autonomy among the Late Woodland village societies of interior Virginia in which a mixture of maize farming and the collection of wild food resources were successful for more than 600 years. This book--uniting biological and cultural aspects of the data for a holistic understanding of everyday life in the period--will be of interest to ethnohistorians, osteologists, bioarchaeologists, and anyone studying Late Woodland, Mississippian, and contact periods, as well as middle range societies, in the Eastern Woodlands. Combines recent research with insights from anthropology, historiography, and oral tradition to examine the cultural landscape preceding and immediately following the arrival of Europeans After establishing the distribution of prehistoric and historic populations from the northeastern Appalachian forests to the southern trans-Mississippian prairies, the contributors consider the archaeological and cultural record of several specific groups, including Mohawk and Onondaga, Monacan, Coosa, and Calusa. For each, they present new evidence of cultural changes prior to European contact, including populations movements triggered by the Little Ice Age (AD 1550-1770), shifting exchange and warfare networks, geological restriction of effective maize subsistence, and use of empty hunting territories as buffers between politically unstable neighbors. The contributors also trace European influences, including the devastation caused by European-introduced epidemics and the paths of European trade goods that transformed existing Native American-exchange networks. While the profound effects of European explorers, missionaries, and traders on Eastern Woodlands tribes cannot be denied, the archaeological evidence suggests that several indigenous societies were already in the process of redefinition prior to European contact. The essays gathered here show that, whether formed in response to natural or human forces, cultural change may be traced through archaeological artifacts, which play a critical role in answering current questions regarding cultural persistence.
