Circulating Books

The General Collection (floors 1-3) contains most of the library’s print books. The Children’s Literature Collection (second floor) contains fiction and nonfiction appropriate for children and young adults. The Current Reading Collection (fourth floor) has popular fiction and other non-academic books. All of these materials can be checked out by all patrons.

Audio Visual

DVDs (fourth floor) can be checked out by current Randolph College community members.

Course Reserves

Faculty can put materials on reserve for specific courses. These are kept behind the circulation desk. They can be checked out by students, faculty, and staff for two hours at a time for in-library use only.

Reference Books

The Reference Collection (fourth floor) contains encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, and other reference books. These can be used in the library but not checked out.

Special Collections & Archives

The library’s special collections include the Pearl S. Buck Collections, the Charlotte Cushman Collection, the Collection of Writings by Virginia Women, the Lininger Children’s Literature Collection, and the Rare Books Collection. The College Archives contain materials related to the history of Randolph College and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. These materials can be viewed by appointment only and cannot be checked out.

Periodicals & Journals

In addition to extensive online resources, the library maintains a limited number of print magazines and journals, located on the two lower floors of the 1929 building.  (Please ask for assistance if you cannot locate this area.). These can be used in the library but are not available for checkout.

Patron Types

Current Students, Faculty, and Staff

Current Randolph College undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff can check out library materials in person using their Paw Pass. They can access online materials from on or off campus using their school login. Current students, faculty, and staff can check out up to 50 items at time; they also have access to interlibrary loan.

Emeriti Faculty

Emeriti faculty retain their borrowing privileges, and those who live within the community borrower residential zone can check out up to 50 items at a time. Emeriti faculty may request materials through ILL; however, any charges from a lending library for the loan of materials will need to be paid by the emeriti faculty member who placed the request.

Library Employees

Employees of Lipscomb Library are subject to the same regulations as other Randolph College faculty, staff, and students. No library employee may use their own account to check out materials to any non-patron.

Family

Partners/spouses and children of Randolph College faculty and staff can get a card by coming to the library. They can check out up to ten items at a time. They cannot use interlibrary loan. Online resources may be accessed by logging onto the campus guest WiFi network with their own device or by using the library's quick-use computer in the reference area.

Alumni

Randolph College alumni who live within the community borrower residential zone can use their Paw Pass or get a library card for limited borrowing privileges after graduation. They can check out up to five items at a time. Alumni cannot check out audio visual materials or use interlibrary loan. Online resources may be accessed by logging onto the campus guest WiFi network with their own device or by using the library's quick-use computer in the reference area.

Community Borrowers

Residents of Bedford, Amherst, and Campbell Counties and of the City of Lynchburg who are at least 18 years of age can apply for a community borrower card. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis; cards are given only to people who need access to Lipscomb Library’s particular resources (all others are encouraged to use their local public library instead). Approved community borrowers can check out up to five items at a time. They cannot check out audio visual materials or use interlibrary loan. Online resources may be accessed by logging onto the campus guest WiFi network with their own device or by using the library's quick-use computer in the reference area.

VIVA Cooperative Borrowers

The Cooperative Borrowing Program allows students, faculty, and staff at VIVA Member Libraries to request to borrow materials onsite from any participating academic library.  Sweet Briar College, the University of Lynchburg, and Liberty University participate in this program.  They cannot check out audio visual materials or use interlibrary loan, and can check out up to five items at a time.  Online resources may be accessed by logging onto the campus guest WiFi network with their own device or by using the library's quick-use computer in the reference area.

Procedures

Notices

Courtesy notices are automatically generated by our system and sent via email.  You will receive a notice when you check out materials and a reminder notice a few days prior to an item’s due date. If the item is not returned or renewed by the due date, an overdue notice will follow. Borrowers must take note of the due dates for all items checked out and renew or return them on time. Patrons are responsible for all library materials checked out with their card. Overdue and recall notices are emailed to the address provided to the library. The library is not responsible for any unread email.

Fines

Lipscomb Library does not charge fines for overdue materials.

Lost or Damaged Material

Patrons are fully responsible for all library materials charged out to them. In the event that an item is lost or damaged, the library will charge the cost of the item plus a $30.00 processing fee per item. All library materials checked out to students will be due on the final day of classes during the second semester. Unreturned materials will be marked as lost, and the student will be charged a replacement and processing fee. Student records are placed on hold (making them unable to register for classes or room draw, send transcripts, or receive diploma) if they owe Lipscomb Library $10 or more.

Confidentiality

Lipscomb Library is committed to the protection of the right of privacy of all library patrons (Code of Virginia, Virginia Freedom of Information Act, 2.2-3705.7). All patron information (including personal information, items requested, and items checked out) is confidential and will not be shared with anyone who does not work for the library.
