How Do I...?: Books

Books

Lipscomb Library houses hundreds of thousands of print books. We also provide access to ebooks through our database subscriptions. Below, learn how to find a book using the library catalog, and see some options for finding ebooks.

eBook Collections

The library catalog can be used to search for physical books in the library's holdings. To locate e-books, use the search options below:

OneSearch - The "OneSearch" option on the library homepage includes physical books, ebooks, videos, articles, and more. In the results page, use the options on the left-hand side to limit to e-books.

ACLS Humanities E-Book - Humanities-based eBook collection from the American Council of Learned Societies

eBook Academic Collection - eBooks covering a range of academic subject areas

eBook History Collection - eBooks covering the history of humanities-related topics

Springer Behavioral Science eBook Collection - Full-text eBooks in behavioral science and psychology

Using the Library Catalog

Use the library catalog to find books owned by our library. On the library homepage, select the "Library Catalog" tab of the search box (pictured below). You can search by title, author, or keyword.

In the results, you will see books from both our collection and the collection of Sweet Briar College. This is because we share collections--you can go to Sweet Briar and check out their books with your Paw Pass, and Sweet Briar students can check out our books. You can limit the results to filter out Sweet Briar's holdings on the left-hand side.

Click on the book you want to check out and scroll down to find the call number (or "shelf number"). Make sure you're viewing the call number for the Randolph College copy and not the Sweet Briar copy, if there is one. Randolph College uses the Dewey Decimal system, so the call number will start with a number (reference books are an exception and will start with the letter "R" followed by the numbers).

Write down the call number (yes, the whole thing) or take a picture of it. Check our spaces page to find out which floor your call number is located. This information is also posted next to the elevator on each floor of the library. Once you find the right floor, you'll need to locate the correct shelf. The range of call numbers is posted on the side of every shelf. Once you find the correct shelf, you'll need to find your book on that shelf. Remember to ask for help if you need it (there's no shame in not being able to find the book!).
